An essential part of being a researcher is not only to generate knowledge but also to communicate your work appropriately. With papers being the prevalent form of communication in academia, writing skills are crucial for any researcher. A specific challenge in academic writing is that it precisely documents your work and is at the same time interesting to read. After all, who likes boring papers?
Considering the importance of writing, the PhD Committee of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration therefore would like to invite you the
“PhD Seminar on Exciting Writing“, held on 7 November from 13-17h at the Karl-Dittrichzaal, UM Visitor Centre, Bonnefantenstraat 2.
Two distinguished guest speakers, Carla Denly and Stafford Wadsworth – both with a professional background in journalism, will talk about how they attract the attention of their audiences and how to produce exciting written work.
Carla Denly is an award-winning news and documentary producer from Los Angeles, USA. She has worked for ABC News in various roles and produced documentaries for PBS. More recently, she has been producing profiles of outstanding scientists for PBS and is therefore well acquainted with the problem to convey the work of researchers to a wider audience.
Stafford Wadsworth was born in Lincoln, UK. He is founder member of and taught at the State School of Interpreting and Translation in Maastricht from 1981 to 1993. Mr Wadsworth also taught legal English to graduate classes at the universities of Maastricht and Amsterdam and has written a number of scholarly papers on phonetics and legal translation. Since 1983, Stafford Wadsworth has also been active as a journalist. He was editor-in-chief of Limburg International Magazine, from 1989 to 1999, writing extensively on business, the arts and tourism and producing some 600 stories and a further 3000 short notices on business in Limburg and the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.
The participating FEBA PhD students are encouraged to submit introductions to their current papers, research proposals, or other written motivations for their research in advance. The speakers will analyze the submitted documents and will subsequently address (part of) them in anonymized form during the seminar to point out stylistically good parts and areas for improvement. Please note that the submission deadline for your introductions is 17 October 3pm. Please submit your documents (2-page maximum) to one of the PhD Committee members in pdf-format. All participants that submitted an introduction and take part in the seminar also have the chance to win a book on writing well.
Please note that only a limited number of places is available, which will be given out on a first come first serve basis. While this seminar is primarily targeted at FEBA PhD students, other faculty as well as PhD students from MERIT and School of Governance are welcome to join in. To subscribe you have to sign up in person before 17 October 3pm for FEBA members (27 October for non-FEBA) with one of the PhD Committee members, who you can find at the following locations:
